Something about church programs in September has always felt like a horse race to me.  Officially, the year might start in January, but September is the month we really get cranking with Sunday School classes, Bible Studies, Youth Fellowship, and Choir Rehearsals for all ages. Academic calendars must be set, and new patterns must be established with the changing times.  On the one hand, I'm a bit wistful for the (relative) calm of Summer.  On the other hand, I'm really excited to meet new participants in our programs and to reconnect with new friends.

Perhaps the greatest highlight of my week in this crazy season is watching little children walk beside my office on their way to the Angel or Cherub choirs (which have almost doubled in size through the last year).  They are so cute when they walk down the hall, and it is great to reconnect with their parents, too.  Every now and then, a teenager drops in the office just to chat, and I appreciate their desire to "touch base", too.  I'm so much more relaxed on Wednesdays than on Sundays, and it doesn't bother me a bit to be "interrupted."  So, feel free to drop by the office (up to 6 p.m.) and reconnect.

Speaking of reconnecting, wasn't it fun to see old and new friends at the annual church picnic last Sunday afternoon!  The young kids always have a great time in those "jumpers", and the older kids enjoyed throwing Frisbees with Randi and Todd.  Meanwhile, Hal and Sandy Clayson kept us well supplied with hot dogs (and desserts) while Allen Petker pulled together a strolling men's quartet.  I don't remember the last time I heard good a "barbershop" quartet, but I know that it was fun on Sunday!

This Sunday, we're going to focus on a central means of staying connecting to God and one another in this busy time:  the Bible.  I know it's a complicated book that has occasionally been abused, but there is so much beauty there!  This week's passage, Psalm 119:89-96,  will remind us of the blessings we can receive from spending some good quality time in this book..  I hope you'll join us!

Have a great week!

Neal

Pastor Needs Housing!

Do you have an extra bedroom in your house? Would you like to earn about $3,000 in the next 5 months? A Presbyterian Pastor named Scott Beck is looking for a room to sleep in while he undergoes training at the Los Angeles Fire Academy in San Pedro. The training is rigorous, and the study is demanding, so he won't have a lot of time to socialize. All he requests is a quiet bedroom, bath, and space for a miniature frig and microwave oven. The Academy ruins from September 22 until early February. Call Scott at 805-798-5789 if you are intersted.
