Don't Forget Your "T" Shirt! We've come a long way from
the day when "proper" women wore white gloves to church and
most men wore full dress suits (with pocket handkerchiefs, as well). A
few of us still hold out with neck ties, but even die hards (like
me) will probably ease up this Sunday morning, because this is the
week we are all supposed to wear our oldest
(presentable) Vacation Bible School T shirt. I'm planning to have a
"prize" for the person who brings the oldest one, and I'm
also planning to recognize those who've served us in this ministry
for 10 years or more. The theme verse for VBS is
"Choose this day whom ye shall serve" (Joshua 24:15), and
each school day of next week will feature a single crucial choice.
These choices will be developed through a daily Bible story and set
within an "Amusement Park" motif. As usual, there
will be lots of special foods, songs, crafts, and games. There will
be lots of fresh, young faces coming through our doors, and there
will be some beloved veterans as well. I've known so many moms
through the years who staffed VBS for their children. The energy and
creativity of these women is really great. I've known a few
grandmothers through the years who staffed VBS for their
grandchildren. The dedication and devotion of these women is
inspiring. I've also known quite a few men who broke the "gender
barrier" to have a great time with our kids in VBS. The example
set by these men is priceless. But I've known very few adults (until
I came to First Pres) who continued to serve in this ministry even
after their own children or grandchildren were grown and gone. Now
that I'm at First Pres, I know several folks like that, and
they are my heroes! I hope you will join me in
recognizing these terrific volunteers this Sunday, August 3.
Our church would never be the same without them. Neal July 31 Calendar Highlights Summer is going so fast!
